About Us
The Hide at High Oatfield is a true family project, born from a desire to create a peaceful space for our own family and now shared with guests seeking a quiet corner of the Isle of Mull. Having built the majority of our own home here sixteen years ago, we decided to return to our tools to transform an empty plot into a bespoke couples’ retreat.
Designed by Mike one evening and built from scratch over twelve months, the studio was a collective effort. From our nephew helping with the framing to our daughter’s partner assisting with the roof trusses, every part of the building has been handled with care. We chose natural larch cladding and a traditional tin roof to ensure the studio sits harmoniously within the landscape, while three-metre French windows were a priority to frame the constant movement of wildlife and the changing light over the hills.
Today, my time is balanced between hosting and managing the land. While I focus on the interiors and the guest experience, I have also poured my own history into this building. This has created a warm, highly insulated, and modern space that I hope offers the same sense of calm to my guests as it does to me.
Explore the Grounds & Beyond
Our site at Lochdon is a haven for nature enthusiasts. From the private decking of the studio, guests frequently spot sea eagles, golden eagles, and hen harriers hunting over the marshland. The surrounding area is rich with biodiversity, offering a slow pace of life where the main soundtrack is the call of the birds and the wind through the glen.
